| Kindergarten | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kindergarten is designed to be appropriate for children at many different developmental levels with a variety of group and individual activities. Math activities include learning patterns, one-to-one correspondence, counting up to 20 and measurement. Language arts activities include learning print awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, transitional spelling, listening, and speaking. Many of our social studies and science topics are incorporated into the language arts activities. We also provide a wide variety of opportunities to improve motor, creative, and social skills. The kindergarten students go to the computer lab twice a week and the library once a week. Our school counselor does a lesson twice a month with the children. Parents are encouraged to be partners with the kindergarten teachers in their child's education. |

| First Grade | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
First Grade is a fun and exciting year for boys and girls. It is the first year they stay at school all day, eat lunch in the cafeteria, and have PE and music. It is also very demanding and challenging for first-graders. They are required to learn new skills such as: reading, writing on lined paper, and basic math facts. We have fun time, too. We do art projects, learning centers, and what day would be complete without recess! Something new the first grade is doing this year is Saxon Phonics. It is a complete phonics program that compliments our reading series. Some of you may ask, "What is phonics really?" Phonics is one way of attacking or decoding words which are not recognized on sight. About 85% of the words and syllables of the English language are phonetic. Phonics aids speech in pronunciation and enunciation. It is also an aid in spelling and using the dictionary. First grade has a new art program this year. We also go to the computer lab on a regular basis. First grade goes to the library every Wednesday to check out books. We also go the first and third Fridays for Fun Friday which is a special time for library lessons. As you can see, we have a busy and exhilarating year ahead! |

| Second Grade | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Second grade is a fun and exciting year for students, parents and teachers alike. In reading, students continue to build on the phonics and sight words they learned in first grade. Word attack skills are strengthened as comprehension becomes more complex. Shurley English is introduced to aid in understanding the English language and thus help develop better writers. Science and social studies become more intriguing because students can read and discover as they work more independently and in small groups. Art and handwriting are more enjoyable because small motor skills have developed. We also have an art curriculum. Students go to music, PE and computer lab daily. They also visit the library at least once a week. Twice a month we attend a Fun Friday in the library for special lessons. As you can see, second grade promises lots of learning as our skills and confidence develop. |

| Third Grade | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Third grade is such an exciting year! As our students come to us, two of the subjects we hear most about are cursive writing and multiplication. Yes, we really do begin both in third grade. Before we move to multiplication in math, we first make sure we know our basic addition and subtraction facts. From there, we move on to two-, three-, and even four-digit addition and subtraction. Place value, measurement, time, and fractions round out our year. Reading, reading, reading and more reading is taught and encouraged all year. We do reading in class, in the computer lab, check-out books (two-one for home and one for school!), and are using a new reading program called Reading Counts. Tests are given weekly over stories read in class from the reading text. Each week brings us a new spelling list of words to study. We will be working a lot on vowel spelling combinations and consonant blend rules. Communities is the key word in Social Studies. We learn about different types of communities and why people live in them. Map skills and geography are also studied all year long. Plants, animals, the Solar System--just a few of the interesting subjects we will study in Science. Shurley English picks up where second grade ended and you will often here the buzz of jingles coming from our rooms. We also have a new art curriculum this year. Students to to music, PE, and computer lab daily. They also go to the library on a regular basis. Third grade is a year of testing to see where each child is in their learning. The Gates-MacGinitie test in reading comprehension and vocabulary is given in September and January, while a state-mandated standardized test will be given in February. We would like to emphasize how important even 15 minutes a night given by parents to their children to review work, do flash cards, practice spelling, and most importantly READ can be to the success their child will have in school! Third grade is COOL! |

Fourth grade at Glenwood School is a fun and exciting grade. During this year the students are introduced to a foreign language, either Spanish or French. The classes study Oklahoma and have the opportunity to visit an original one-room schoolhouse on the grounds of the Cherokee Strip Museum. In math we continue working on basic math facts along with mastering multiplication and division problems. Students are introduced to fractions and decimals along with many higher-level thinking skills. Fourth-graders continue working on their reading and comprehension skills and learn many vocabulary words and research skills. The states are studied in depth in geography and science has a variety of topics to be studied. Music and Physical Education are also incorporated in the schedule to help our pupils become well-rounded students and leaders of tomorrow. |

| Fifth Grade | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Fifth Grade is an exciting and challenging year. In math we continue to expand our work in long division, decimals, fractions and geometry. Social Studies lessons cover United States history from the explorers through the Civil War. We have an Indian Education program which brings an Indian Education teacher into our classroom about every six weeks. Our science curriculum covers space, earth science, weather, animals, and plants. In addition we have a health unit and our students participate in the drug education program D.A.R.E. Other areas of study include geography skills and creative writing. This year our reading program will be enhanced by the opportunity to participate in the Reading Counts program. Students also continue to learn with either Spanish or French as a foreign language. All of these will hopefully help us to achieve success on our fifth grade P.A.S.S. tests which will be in February. Special activities include our October music program, a Spelling Bee, Sequoyah Bowl, Little Olympics (where we cheer on our sixth graders and a few fifth graders). Fifth-grade students serve as office helpers (cadets) by picking up attendance charts each morning. We also have the opportunity to join a Science Club and try out for Showstoppers and the Tri-State Choirs. |

Sixth grade is a year of opportunities. Students have the opportunity to join the Junior Patrol which helps students safely cross the streets. Band and orchestra are options for sixth-graders. They may also try out for Showstoppers which is the Glenwood show choir. Teachers provide the students with experiences to develop responsibility and organizational skills essential in Junior High. Switching classes is one of those experiences. Sixth-graders have the opportunity to be positive role models for the other students at Glenwood. The sixth-grade teachers are encouraging them to seize the opportunities through a kaleidoscope of activities. |
