Welcome to Lincoln Academy Counseling Corner. Counseling has been both rewarding and challenging for me. I strongly believe that each and every individual can benefit from counseling. My personal goal is to help our students with any issues that may prevent them from reaching their goals. I am always available to the students. Sandy Mann, Lincoln Academy Counselor
Individual Counseling During the first couple
of weeks the students and I have an individual session to help us get to
know each other. Together we fill out an intake form which includes questions
about them, their family, jobs, goals, etc. After the intake I am available
to the students on an as need basis. They are more than welcome to come
talk to me about anything. Parents, teachers, and other students may also
refer a student to me. Counseling is strictly nonjudgmental and confidential.
Confidentiality laws apply as long as the student is safe. I am required
by law to share information if the student is going to hurt themselves,
someone else, or if someone is going to hurt them. This enables me to keep
our
Group Counseling Group counseling is held during home room classes. I lead group discussions with the hope of guiding the students towards more positive choices. Some examples of group topics include bad habits, will power, stress, anger management, and personal goals. Group sessions are also needed at times to discuss current events. Current events such as killings, bombings, arrests, and child abuse need to be addressed when students are stressed about them. We all watch the news, and I feel that expressing emotions towards these issues is essential.
Family Counseling Family counseling is offered to families with students attending Lincoln. Family counseling is optional. Many times families can communicate better in a structured setting. My goal for family counseling sessions is to get the family to communicate in a non-threatening, nonjudgmental way.
Drug and Alcohol Counseling Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counseling is offered in a way that allows the students to understand their habit with the hope of stopping it. Through a supportive, understanding atmosphere, students learn about their habits and how they impact their lives. Students also learn alternatives to using drugs and alcohol along with skills to hopefully live a drug-free life. Severe drug or alcohol addiction may be referred out to other agencies with more experience with addiction. Drug and Alcohol Addiction Resources
Anger Management A common issue among teenagers in general is dealing appropriately with anger issues. During anger management counseling, students explore the origin of their anger, and learn positive ways of dealing with it. Students learn how to recognize their individual anger clues, learn how to control their responses and restructure their thoughts in a more positive manner.
Teen Moms The Teen Moms program is designed to assist girls with the knowledge and skills to become a good parent. Teen Moms gives the girls a chance to talk about issues with other teen moms that may have similar issues. Many of these girls are facing parenting issues along with stress related to school, family, friends, work, money, and/or boyfriends. Teen Moms allows them time to talk about these issues. The girls learn many important educational topics relating to their babies which include pregnancy, birth, breast vs. bottle feeding, SIDS, shaken baby syndrome, bathing, diapering, infant massage, illnesses, nutrition, baby sitters, day care, weaning, play safety, discipline, & toilet training. During the course of the year the girls learn how to sew to help make outfits, blankets, and other craft items for their babies. We have 2 parties per year where the students bring their babies together and have some fun. Lincoln also provides a clothes closet for the teen moms. The girls can bring clothes that their baby has out grown and exchange them for clothes to fit. We also receive donations of formula, diapers, baby food, baby clothes and other baby items. I strongly encourage the girls to enroll in other programs available to them such as Parents as Teachers, Children First, Youth for Christ Teen Moms, and WIC. Teen Dads are also given the chance to participate in a Teen Dads program outside of school time and can receive class credit.

College Placement Within the guidance and counseling, students are assisted in making career choices which includes post-secondary education. I help the students in selecting schools, whether it be vo-tech, college, or a trade school. They are assisted in enrollment procedures, financial aid, grants, scholarships, and taking the ACT.
