An Open Letter to Spring 2020 Student Teachers

Dear Future Teacher:

I hope this message finds you safe, healthy and spending valuable time with your loved ones. It will, no doubt, also find you missing the young students you met and began teaching earlier this semester, before the school year was interrupted by this unprecedented health crisis.

HR & Communication TeamI’ve been in education for more than 20 years, and – even though you are just starting out – we have at least one thing in common: our life this spring is going to be much different than we thought it would be. I never dreamed I would be trying to meet new teachers through social media and email, while you probably never imagined you’d be job hunting without the opportunity to visit buildings and interview in person. Yet, here we are, making the best of it so we can serve those most important, our students. Thankfully, we’re all in this together.

I was really looking forward to meeting many of you at the university career fairs. I understand, however, that it was just not possible at this time. I hope I have the opportunity to get to know you in the future, but – for now – I am sharing this letter to introduce myself and, more importantly, to introduce Enid Public Schools.

First, thank you for choosing to be a teacher. Students across the nation – but especially those in Oklahoma – need you, your caring heart and your professional expertise. It’s true what they say: teachers really do change the world one child at a time. Over your career, you will impact thousands of students … tomorrow’s doctors, attorneys, state leaders, law enforcement officers, educators and more. We appreciate you and the work you will be accomplishing in the coming years.

Secondly, please allow me to share some of the reasons our school district is a great place to work and to learn. Enid Public Schools serves 7,900 students in a supportive community of 50,000. We are known as one of Oklahoma’s most innovative districts, with 1:1 technology for every student and free mobile hotspots for all sixth- through 12th- graders. We believe in delivering excellence in education across the district – from our youngest learners to those about to graduate. We are home to one of the state’s first intergenerational programs for pre-kindergartens and home to the state’s second University Center for high school students. Additionally, we have completed nearly $200 million in bond improvements since 2010, thanks to the generosity of our local voters. Most importantly, we understand teachers are the heart and soul of the school system. We are proud to offer a compensation package of $40,100 for first-year teachers (including district-paid retirement), along with first-class opportunities for mentoring and professional development. I invite you to learn more here: Why Enid Schools?

Finally, I want to encourage you to do what is necessary in the immediate future to protect yourself while our state and country works to manage this health crisis. There is nothing more important than ensuring your safety and the safety of your loved ones. Fortunately, this situation does not have to delay your efforts to find the perfect school family for next year. You can apply anytime at enidpublicschools.org/applytoday, and our principals are ready and excited to interview candidates by phone or videoconference. Our HR & Communication Team (pictured above) is also ready to assist you at anytime:
