Irving Named Head Boys Basketball Coach

Enid Public Schools has selected Derrick Irving as head coach of the boys’ basketball team.

His duties will begin immediately.

"I am very excited to see Coach Irving join our Plainsmen Basketball program as head coach,” said Robb Mills, athletic director. “His ability to build strong, positive relationships with our athletes will undoubtedly foster greater confidence in our players' abilities."

Irving has been with EPS since 2023, where he began his education career with the district as a PE Teacher at Emerson Middle School and as the Head Freshman Coach/Varsity Assistant at Enid High School. In year two he was elevated to the Head Varsity Assistant/Head Coach Junior Varsity.

Over the last three summers Coach Irving has been entrenched in the Amateur Athletic Union basketball community as the Head Boy’s Coach and Director of Player Development & Recruiting for Legacy Youth Basketball in Enid. His responsibilities include designing and executing practice and game plans, running weekly skill workouts, coaching boys grade 8 -12, etc.

Irving also has experience with youth outreach outside of Enid. Helping over 100 high school and junior college basketball players gain college opportunities at the next level through his recruiting service, Aspiring Prospects. Originally from New York City, “Coach Irv” as he is affectionately called by Enid students, formerly coached on the junior college level with ASA College in Brooklyn, NY and on the prep school level with Tennessee Preparatory Academy in Memphis, TN & OnPoint Academy in El Reno, OK.

“Basketball has the power to bring a community together, and I’m committed to leading a program our school and town can be proud of,” said Irving. “We will compete with heart, play with pride, and hold ourselves to the highest standard every practice, every game, every day.”

“Basketball is more than a game… it's a classroom for life,” said Irving, “My goal is to help our players grow not just as athletes, but as leaders, teammates and people ready to face any challenge.”

EPS Announces New Head Swim Coach

Enid Public Schools is thrilled to announce Katie Byrd as the new Enid High School head boy’s and girl’s swim coach.

Her duties will begin immediately.

Byrd has been devoted to the EHS swim team since 2023 as an assistant coach and is excited to step into the head roll.

“I'm thrilled and honored to be the head swim coach at EHS,” said Byrd. “I've been very fortunate to work alongside our swimmers for the past few years and witness their talent dedication to the sport. My goals are to build on the strong foundation we've already established and help more EPS students develop a love for competitive swimming. I'm excited to see our team grow and continue our tradition of success.”

Byrd has served as a teacher at EHS since 2017 and has been an instructional coach. She was named EHS’s Teacher of the Year in 2022. She has additional coaching experience in golf at EHS and cheerleading at Chisholm High School for nine years.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Coach Byrd as the new head coach of our Enid Swimming Program," said athletic director Robb Mills. "She has a great ability to build strong, positive relationships with our athletes, which I'm confident will boost their skills and self-confidence.

Byrd is involved in her church, World Harvest, and has a son, Wyatt, who is a sixth grader at Waller Middle School.
